Scriber
Scriber is a tool to assist in the transcription of audio and video media. Traditionally, this was done from a tape player with a special foot control that provided pause, back-step and play functions. Scriber provides these capabilities from digital media (audio or video) with the use of special keyboard commands or control buttons.
The audio or video source must be already digitized in one of several standard formats. Scriber can then load the source and play it upon command. The user types the transcription into the editor window while the source plays. The media can be paused, back-stepped and forwarded-stepped from a user command as as as positioned to any desired point within the source for replay.
Scriber is Java based and relies on the Java Media Framework (JMF). A Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and the JMF must be pre-installed on your computer before Scriber will run. These are available freely from Sun Microsystems at http://javasoft.com. JMF supports a range of audio and video file formats, including WAV, AIF, AVI, AU, MP3, MIDI, MPEG and MOV.
Scriber can also be used to index audio and video media, by creating an index file with cue positions. This file can be reloaded, and the cues (with annotations) used to reposition the source at the required location.
A trial version of Scriber can be downloaded from here. (limited to 60 secs of play time)
The license fee to register Scriber is US$29.00 per workstation. Registration is available here Your registration code will be sent by email upon receipt of payment.
